Chartered in 1941, Holly Ridge is a small, thriving residential community. Jacksonville
Jacksonville is the commercial hub of Onslow County and home to both Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune and Marine Corps Air Station New River. Jacksonville provides all the stores and conveniences associated with larger cities while retaining a small-town feel. Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune is home to an active duty, dependent, retiree and civilian employee population of more than 150,000 people. FEATURED FACT
Home to Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune and Marine Corps Air Station New River, Onslow County was created in 1734 and named for the honorable Arthur Onslow, who served in the British House of Commons. The county was incorporated in 1963 and shares the same motto as the Marine Corps: “Semper Fidelis.” Interestingly, the U.S. government purchased land from an area family with the surname “Marine” to begin construction on MCB Camp Lejeune in 1941.
North Topsail Beach
North Topsail Beach distinguishes itself with its locally famous Stump Sound oysters and renowned inlet surf fishing. Even though it shares a third of the Southern Outer Banks barrier island known as Topsail Island with two other island towns, North Topsail Beach enjoys a certain island exclusivity and is home to picturesque marshes on the sound side and beautiful dunes and beaches on the ocean side. Within these natural attractions is a dearth of activities, including kayaking, beachcombing, boating and more. A wide range of accommodations share the area, including luxury resorts and incredible beach homes. Richlands
Richlands has the distinction of not only being an agricultural hub, but also the site of the first graded school, the first public high school and the first library in the county. Richlands remembers this rich history with the Onslow County Museum, featuring changing exhibits. The town also boasts a beautiful historic district and is home to the Albert J. Ellis Airport which offers daily flight service via US Airways Express and Delta serving Onslow and neighboring counties. Sneads Ferry
Sneads Ferry is located on the New River near the northern tip of Topsail Island off NC Highway 172. The river joins the Intracoastal Waterway at Sneads Ferry, providing access to the Atlantic Ocean. With its bustling commercial fishing community, Sneads Ferry takes in more fish than any other Onslow County port. During World War II Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune was established just north of Sneads Ferry and ever since, active duty Marines and their families have selected Sneads Ferry in which to live or to retire. Seafood lovers never miss the Sneads Ferry Shrimp Festival every August. Charter boats and headboat fishing is available from Sneads Ferry as well as horseback riding, shopping and great seafood restaurants.
