Hampstead
Known as the “Seafood Capital of the Carolinas,” Hampstead is a blooming commercial area and community within a short drive of Wilmington. Hampstead offers the small-town appeal many seek, while still remaining closely connected to the city. Hampstead claims an interesting history, as George Washington is reported to have stayed overnight at a local tavern. Hampstead has come a long way from its humble beginnings as a fishing village and whistle-stop alongside the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad. It is currently one of the fastest growing areas in the state, helped by having a proximity to the beautiful beaches and city comforts. Contact the Hampstead Chamber of Commerce, P.O. FEATURED FACT
After World War II, Topsail Island in Pender County was chosen as the test site for a guided missile program known as Operation Bumblebee. Some 200 experimental missiles were launched from the island’s beaches during the late 1940s, resulting in the proven success of the ramjet engine, which can push an aircraft past the speed of sound. Some of the program’s concrete observation towers have now been converted into impressive beach homes.
